Two systems, one birth
BaZi 八字 and Purple Star Astrology 紫微斗數 (Zi Wei Dou Shu) are two Chinese systems that both start from the same moment: your birth date and hour. They share a cultural root and a common language of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, but they read that moment in very different ways. When people compare bazi vs purple star astrology, they are really asking which lens suits the kind of picture they want to see.
BaZi builds a four-pillar structure from the year, month, day and hour. It treats the day pillar as the self and works with the five elements and their cycles. Purple Star maps the same birth information onto twelve palaces and places stars inside them, each star carrying its own character and story.
Both systems are complete on their own. Neither replaces the other. They are two traditions that grew side by side, and many readers find value in looking at both.
What each one needs
BaZi uses the solar terms for its months. The month pillar is not simply the lunar month number; it is determined by which solar term the birth falls into. This means BaZi calculations rely on the solar calendar, not the lunar one. The birth hour is essential, because the hour pillar holds the final stem and branch and affects the Day Master's interactions.
Purple Star works from the lunar calendar to set the month and day. It still needs the birth hour to place stars and determine the Life Palace 命宮. Both systems require a date that can be converted to the Chinese calendar, and both take a solar date from the reader and convert it internally.
If the birth hour is unknown, Purple Star has more room to adjust: some schools use a default hour or multiple charts. BaZi typically flags the hour as unknown and reads the other three pillars with caution. Neither system works at full strength without the hour.
What each one reads
BaZi reads four pillars, each with a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The Day Master is the stem of the day pillar, and everything else is a Ten God relative to it. In the example chart, the Day Master is 丁 Yin Fire, born in the month of 丙子, where the month stem 丙 is a Rob Wealth 劫財. The year stem 己 is an Eating God 食神. The hidden stems inside each branch add further Ten Gods: the year branch 巳 hides 丙 Rob Wealth, 庚 Direct Wealth, and 戊 Hurting Officer. The day branch 未 hides 己 Eating God, 丁 Friend, and 乙 Indirect Resource. The hour branch 午 hides 丁 Friend and 己 Eating God.
The BaZi reader looks at element cycles: Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water, Water produces Wood. Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood. The whole chart decides how these tendencies land. A Directional Combination 三會 of 巳午未 from year, day and hour draws the Fire energy together. A Six Combination 六合 of 未午 connects day and hour. A Clash 六沖 of 子午 between month and hour and a Harm 六害 of 子未 between month and day create tension.
Purple Star reads twelve palaces 宮, each an area of life: Life Palace 命宮, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Social, Career, Property, Virtue, and Parents. Stars 星 are placed into these palaces. Each star has a nature: some are noble, some are forceful, some are gentle. The Sun 太陽 is a bright, giving star, and when it sits in the Life Palace it tends to indicate a person who shines outwardly and draws attention.
Timing
BaZi divides life into luck pillars. Each luck pillar covers ten years and has a stem and a branch. The first luck pillar starts at a calculated age. In the example chart, the first luck pillar 丁丑 began at age 8 in 1997. The stem 丁 is a Friend 比肩. The next pillar 戊寅 began at age 18 in 2007, with a Hurting Officer 傷官 stem. The third pillar 己卯 started at age 28 in 2017, with an Eating God 食神 stem. Each ten-year period carries the flavour of that stem and branch.
Within each luck pillar, individual years are read as they arrive. A year's stem and branch interact with the chart and the luck pillar. A year that brings favourable elements tends to feel smoother; a year that brings unfavourable ones tends to feel more effortful.
Purple Star uses ten-year decades called 大限. Each decade belongs to one of the twelve palaces, and the stars in that palace become active. The years within a decade are read as 流年, flowing years, each one activating a different palace. The stars that move with the year interact with the fixed stars in the chart.
One person, two lenses
The example's BaZi chart shows a 丁 Yin Fire Day Master born in the month of 丙子, where the month branch 子 carries 癸 Seven Killings 七殺. The day pillar is 丁未. The Snake, Goat and Horse branches of its year, day and hour pillars form a Directional Combination 三會 toward Fire. The month and hour clash, and the month and day harm each other. Its favourable elements are Wood and Fire; its unfavourable ones are Earth, Metal and Water.
Purple Star puts the Sun 太陽 in the same person's Life Palace 命宮. The Sun is a yang star, associated with generosity, visibility and a public role. It tends to suggest a person whose life path involves being seen and giving warmth to many people.
BaZi emphasises the internal balance of elements and the relationships between the Day Master and the Ten Gods. Purple Star emphasises the palaces where life events unfold and the stars that colour those areas. BaZi tends to speak in terms of energy and interaction; Purple Star tends to speak in terms of scenes and roles. Neither is more accurate. They are different traditions with different strengths.
Using both
Reading both systems tends to give a fuller picture. BaZi shows the elemental dynamics and the timing of luck pillars. Purple Star shows which areas of life are lit up by certain stars and which decades activate which palaces. One might highlight a tendency that the other does not emphasise.
If you already have your BaZi chart, you can look at your Purple Star chart and see whether the same themes appear in different language. If you start with Purple Star, BaZi can add depth to the timing and the interactions between elements. The two systems do not contradict each other when read well. They complement.
You can see your own chart in each system and compare what each one tends to bring forward. Many readers find that the two together feel more complete than either alone.
