The Ox 丑 in BaZi
Nature
The Ox (丑) is Yin Earth, the last branch of winter. Its month runs from about 6 January to about 4 February, the month that closes winter, when the cold has settled deepest into the ground and the year waits to turn. Its hours are 01:00 to 03:00, the dead of night when most people sleep and the world holds still.
In BaZi, the Ox is like frozen earth at the bottom of a field. It is dense, patient and quiet. Where the Rat of the previous month moves and stirs, the Ox sits and holds. It does not rush. It does not show much on the surface. A person with strong Ox energy in their chart often works steadily, keeps their own counsel and does not need attention. The Ox can carry a great deal without complaint, like a cart horse on a cold road.
Because it is Yin Earth, the Ox is not the mountain of the Dragon or the Dog. It is the soil beneath frost, compact and slow to warm. It stores what it receives and releases nothing lightly. This branch can feel stubborn, but the stubbornness comes from knowing that patience outlasts force. The whole chart decides how this energy lands for a person. In some charts the Ox becomes endurance, in others it becomes a wall that nothing gets through.
Hidden stems
Every Earthly Branch contains hidden stems 藏干, the energies that live inside it. The Ox (丑) holds three hidden stems, all Yin. The first is 己 Yin Earth, the branch's main energy. Ji Earth is the soil of gardens and plains, receptive and nurturing. Inside the Ox, this soil is cold and compact, not yet ready to grow anything.
The second hidden stem is 癸 Yin Water. Gui Water is rain, mist and underground springs. In the Ox, this water is frozen or deeply buried. It gives the branch a hidden reservoir, a slow, quiet resource that does not show on the surface. Someone with strong Ox energy may have deep feelings or intuitions that they do not express easily.
The third hidden stem is 辛 Yin Metal. Xin Metal is fine metal, like a blade, jewellery or a needle. In the Ox, this metal is raw ore still in the ground, not yet refined. It adds a sharp, precise quality beneath the Ox's heavy stillness. The combination of these three hidden stems makes the Ox a storage branch. It holds earth, water and metal together, each one contained and waiting.
Clashes and combinations
The Ox (丑) forms a six-combination 六合 with the Rat (子, Yang Water). When these two branches meet, their energies combine toward Earth. This combination feels like a partnership of opposites. The Rat is quick and restless, the Ox is slow and steady. Together they tend to balance each other. In a chart, this combination can bring cooperation, a joining of forces or a relationship where one person provides the ideas and the other provides the staying power.
The Ox clashes 沖 with the Goat (未, Yin Earth). A clash between these two branches tends to feel like two blocks of earth pressing against each other. Neither gives way easily. In a chart, this clash can bring tension around home, family or foundations. It can feel like being pulled in two directions at once.
The Ox harms 害 the Horse (午, Yang Fire). This harm is a quieter kind of friction. The Horse moves fast and burns bright, while the Ox sits still and cold. When they meet, the Horse may feel slowed down and the Ox may feel irritated. This harm can show up as small, persistent frustrations rather than a big conflict.
The Ox is punished 刑 with the Goat (未, Yin Earth) and with the Dog (戌, Yang Earth). Punishment between the Ox and the Goat can feel like a cycle of mutual blame or resentment that keeps turning. With the Dog, the punishment tends to feel like a standoff, each one waiting for the other to move first.
In each pillar
In the year pillar 年柱, the Ox colours a person's roots and early environment. It suggests a childhood where patience and hard work were valued, where life moved at a steady pace. Others may first see someone with this branch as serious, reserved or old before their time. The family background tends to feel solid but not flashy.
In the month pillar 月柱, the Ox sits in its own season. A person born in the month of the Ox, from about 6 January to about 4 February, has the winter closing around their career and public life. They tend to work best in roles that require endurance, routine and a long view. Their approach to work is methodical, not dramatic.
In the day pillar 日柱, the Ox sits under the Day Master as the spouse branch. This tends to bring a partner who is dependable, practical and perhaps a little stubborn. The marriage energy is steady rather than exciting. The Ox here can also mean the person expresses their own inner nature through patience and quiet loyalty.
In the hour pillar 時柱, the Ox colours later life, children and the final chapter. Someone born in the Ox hours, between 01:00 and 03:00, may find their later years are about consolidation rather than expansion. Children or younger people in their life may be serious and responsible. The Ox in this pillar tends to bring a calm, settled end to the day.
With other signs
The Ox (丑) forms a three-harmony 三合 group with the Snake (巳) and the Rooster (酉), toward Metal. When these three branches appear together in a chart, their energies combine toward Metal. This group tends to feel like a workshop. The Snake plans, the Rooster refines and the Ox provides the steady foundation. People whose year branches are Ox, Snake and Rooster often find they work well together in practical, craft or analytical settings.
The Ox also forms a directional 三會 group with the Pig (亥) and the Rat (子), toward Water. This group is the full winter current. The Pig opens the season, the Rat is the deep middle and the Ox closes it. Together they combine toward Water. This group tends to feel like a long, slow river under ice. People with these year branches may share a quiet, introspective quality and a tendency to think before they act.
When two people's year branches meet, the Ox gets along most easily with the Rat, Snake and Rooster. It tends to find the Goat and Horse more difficult, and the Dog can bring a standoff. The best way to see how two people's branches interact is to put their charts side by side and look at the combinations, clashes and harms together.
