The Tiger 寅 in BaZi
Nature
The Tiger (寅) is Yang Wood, the first branch of spring. Its month runs from about 4 February to about 6 March, the month that opens spring, when the cold earth begins to stir and the first shoots push through frost. Its hours are 03:00 to 05:00, the deep quiet before dawn when the world is still dark but something is already waking. In BaZi, the tiger branch tends to carry a restless, forward energy. It does not wait for permission. Like the season it opens, it pushes ahead, breaks ground, and sets things in motion before the plan is fully formed.
A person with a strong tiger branch in their chart often moves through life with a kind of raw momentum. They start things. They clear paths. But the whole chart decides what this energy does for a person. A Tiger in a balanced chart can mean initiative and courage. In a tense chart, it can mean rushing into things that need more patience. It is the branch of beginnings, and beginnings are never tidy.
The Tiger is also connected to the element of Wood in its full Yang form. This is not the flexible Wood of the Rabbit. It is the trunk, the root, the tree that grows where it decides to grow.
Hidden stems
Every Earthly Branch carries hidden stems 藏干 inside it, like seeds tucked into soil. The Tiger (寅) holds three: 甲 Yang Wood, 丙 Yang Fire, and 戊 Yang Earth. The first and strongest is 甲 Yang Wood, the same element as the branch itself. This is the core of the Tiger. It gives the branch its drive to grow upward and outward, to claim space.
The second hidden stem is 丙 Yang Fire. Fire is born from Wood, so this stem sits inside the Tiger like a spark waiting for fuel. It adds warmth, brightness, and a kind of visible confidence. When the Tiger appears in a chart, this fire can show up as charisma or a quick temper, depending on what surrounds it.
The third hidden stem is 戊 Yang Earth. Earth comes after Fire in the cycle, so this stem is the quietest of the three. It gives the Tiger a grounding influence, a sense of substance beneath the movement. These three stems together make the Tiger more than just Wood. It carries the potential for fire and the weight of earth, all in one branch.
Clashes and combinations
The Tiger (寅) forms a six-combination 六合 with the Pig (亥, Yin Water). This combination combines toward Wood. When these two branches meet, the water of the Pig feeds the Wood of the Tiger, and the energy becomes focused and productive. In a chart, this tends to feel like a steadying influence. The Tiger stops charging ahead and starts growing with purpose. It can show up as a partnership where one person provides the support and the other provides the drive.
The Tiger clashes 沖 with the Monkey (申, Yang Metal). A clash tends to feel like friction or sudden change. Metal cuts Wood, so this clash can bring disruption, especially around plans or projects the Tiger has started. It often shows up in years or luck pillars that contain the Monkey, and it tends to stir things up rather than settle them.
The Tiger harms 害 with the Snake (巳, Yin Fire). Harm is a quieter kind of tension. It can feel like things are slightly off, like a friendship that rubs the wrong way. The Tiger also punishes 刑 with the Snake and with the Monkey. Punishment is a repeating, grinding kind of conflict. When the Tiger meets the Snake, the harm and punishment together can create a pattern of irritation that keeps circling back. With the Monkey, the punishment adds a layer of stubborn friction to the clash.
In each pillar
When the Tiger appears in the year pillar 年柱, it tends to colour a person's roots and early family life with a sense of movement. Others may first see them as someone who is always starting something, always heading somewhere. The family environment may have been one where independence was encouraged or simply unavoidable.
In the month pillar 月柱, the Tiger speaks to work and the season of birth. Someone born in its month, between early February and early March, carries the energy of spring directly into their career. They tend to prefer work that lets them break new ground, not maintain what already exists. The month pillar also reflects the public self, and a Tiger here can make that self seem bold and hard to ignore.
When the Tiger sits in the day pillar 日柱, it becomes the branch under the Day Master, the house of the partner. In a relationship, this tends to bring a need for space and autonomy. The partner may need to understand that the Tiger needs room to grow, not a fence around it.
In the hour pillar 時柱, the Tiger colours later life and the relationship with children. It can suggest a late chapter that is active rather than restful, and children who are independent from a young age. Someone born in the Tiger hours, between 03:00 and 05:00, carries its dawn energy into their final years.
With other signs
The Tiger (寅) belongs to a three-harmony 三合 group with the Horse (午) and the Dog (戌). These three branches together combine toward Fire. When they appear in a chart, they tend to create a warm, active energy. People with these branches in their year pillars often find that they understand each other quickly. There is a natural rhythm between them, like old friends who do not need to explain themselves.
The Tiger also forms a directional 三會 group with the Rabbit (卯) and the Dragon (辰). This group combines toward Wood. It is the full force of spring. Where the three-harmony group is about heat and action, this group is about growth and expansion. People with these year branches tend to share a sense of timing, of moving forward together.
When two people meet and one has a Tiger year branch and the other has a Pig, the six-combination tends to create a supportive bond. With a Monkey, the clash can create excitement or conflict, rarely boredom. With a Snake, the harm and punishment can make the relationship feel like a puzzle that never quite solves itself. If you want to see how the Tiger interacts with other signs in a real chart, put two charts side by side and watch what happens when these branches meet.
