Wood 木 in BaZi
Nature
Wood (木) is the element of growth, expansion and reaching upward. In BaZi, it carries the qualities of a tree pushing through soil, a vine climbing a wall, or a bamboo grove swaying in wind. Wood tends to bring a desire to move forward, to stretch into new space, and to connect roots with what nourishes. The wood element in bazi is not about force; it is about steady, directional pressure over time.
The two stems of Wood show different expressions. Yang Wood (甲) is like a tall tree standing alone, visible and upright. It tends to be direct, principled and hard to bend. Yin Wood (乙) is like grass or flowering vines, flexible and adaptive, finding its way around obstacles rather than pushing through them. The branches that carry Wood are the Tiger (寅) and the Rabbit (卯). Tiger holds Yang Wood and tends to bring sudden, bold growth. Rabbit holds Yin Wood and tends to bring gentler, more patient expansion. A whole chart decides how much of this element a person carries and what it does for them.
With the other elements
In the producing cycle, Water produces Wood, and Wood produces Fire. Water feeding Wood tends to feel like receiving support that lets you grow, whether that is encouragement, knowledge or patience. Wood feeding Fire tends to feel like turning ideas into visible action, like lighting a flame with dry kindling.
In the controlling cycle, Wood controls Earth and Metal controls Wood. Wood holding back Earth tends to feel like breaking through stubborn situations or loosening something stuck. Metal cutting Wood tends to feel like discipline, pruning or being stopped short by rules or sharper minds. Neither cycle is good or bad on its own. A chart with balanced relationships tends to show growth that is neither reckless nor blocked.
Too much, too little
A chart heavy in Wood tends to feel like too many branches in one room. There may be many plans starting at once, a strong will to expand in every direction, and difficulty saying no to new projects. The person may keep pushing forward even when rest is needed, like a tree that grows so fast its trunk cannot support its own crown. Others may see them as stubborn or overwhelming, not because they intend to dominate, but because their growth instinct runs ahead of their awareness.
A chart with very little Wood tends to feel like ground without anchor. There may be less drive to initiate, less patience for slow progress, and a tendency to wait for outside direction before moving. Daily life can feel flat or repetitive, like a garden with no saplings. The person may admire those who start things easily but find it hard to sustain their own momentum. Whether much or little Wood is a difficulty depends entirely on the rest of the chart.
As a Useful God
When Wood is a chart's Useful God (用神), it means the chart needs more of what Wood brings. BaZi chooses this in two common ways. One is by season and climate, called 調候: a chart born in a very cold or very dry season may need Wood as fuel for the Fire that warms it. The other is by strength: if a Day Master is weak and needs support, Wood may serve as a Resource; if a Day Master is strong and needs draining, Wood may serve as Output.
Leaning into Wood as a Useful God tends to show in daily choices. The person may find energy in starting new things, in gardening, in walking through forests, or in work that involves building something from the ground up. Every Day Master meets Wood as a different family member. For example, a Yang Wood Day Master meets Wood as Peers, so leaning into it may mean collaborating with equals. A Metal Day Master meets Wood as Wealth, so leaning into it may mean pursuing what they value. A Water Day Master meets Wood as Output, so leaning into it may mean expressing ideas through creation.
Through the seasons
Wood rises and falls through the year in clear stages. In the Tiger month (寅) and Rabbit month (卯), Wood is Prosperous (旺), at its fullest strength. This is the season of early spring, when growth is visible and rapid. In the Dragon month (辰), Wood becomes Confined (囚), still present but no longer dominant, as Earth begins to take over.
In the Snake (巳) and Horse (午) months, Wood is Resting (休), retreating as Fire flourishes. By the Monkey (申) and Rooster (酉) months, Wood is Dead (死), its energy at its lowest, like a tree in late autumn with no leaves. In the Pig (亥) and Rat (子) months, Wood is Strengthening (相), gathering force underground through winter, ready to rise again. The Dog (戌) and Ox (丑) months also hold Wood as Confined (囚), caught between other seasonal forces.
Energy and rhythm
A chart full of Wood tends to show a steady, outward-pushing energy. The person may wake up ready to act, find it hard to sit still for long, and need physical movement to feel balanced. Rest can feel like a chore rather than a relief. A chart short of Wood tends to show a slower, more hesitant rhythm. The person may need external prompts to start moving and may tire quickly when asked to sustain effort over time. These are tendencies, not diagnoses, and this is not medical advice. The best way to understand your own rhythm is to see how much Wood your chart holds and how it interacts with everything else.
