Friend 比肩 in BaZi
What it is
Friend (比肩) belongs to the Peers family (比劫) of the Ten Gods. It is the stem that shares the same element as your Day Master and the same polarity, which is what separates it from its sibling Rob Wealth (劫財). If your Day Master is Yang Wood, your Friend is another Yang Wood stem. If your Day Master is Yin Fire, your Friend is another Yin Fire stem. The two stand side by side like two trees of the same kind in the same grove.
Think of Friend as a twin who arrived at the same time as you, with the same nature and the same raw materials. Where Rob Wealth is the sibling who reaches for what you reach for, Friend is the one who stands next to you, mirrors your shape and quietly shares your space. Every Day Master meets its Friend through a different stem, and the table below lists them all.
A whole chart decides how strongly this energy shows. One Friend stem in a pillar is ordinary company. Several Friends in the four pillars, or a Friend sitting in the Day Branch, and the quality becomes a steady presence in how a person moves through life.
As a personality
Someone with a prominent Friend in their chart tends to move through the world with a quiet sense of being enough. They do not rush to prove themselves because they already know who they are. At a gathering, they are the person who listens more than they talk, nods along and stays solid while others shift opinions. They can carry a heavy box up three flights of stairs without asking for help, and they will not mention it afterward.
The gift here is steadiness and self-reliance. A person with strong Friend energy does not crumble under pressure or change course just because someone disagrees. They hold their ground, and that ground tends to be clear and uncluttered. The blind spot is that this same steadiness can turn into stubbornness. They may refuse help even when they need it, or stay in a situation long after it has stopped working, simply because they decided to see it through. They can also struggle to see another person's point of view when their own feels so solid.
Work and money
In work, Friend energy tends to favor roles where a person works alone or in a small team with clear boundaries. Solitary crafts, independent consulting, writing, coding, driving, farming or running a single-person business all suit the self-contained nature of Friend. These people do not need a boss to tell them what to do, and they do not enjoy offices where everyone shares a desk and a calendar. They prefer to own their time and their tools.
With money, Friend tends to be careful and self-sufficient. They do not borrow easily, and they do not lend easily either. They prefer to earn what they need and keep it separate from other people's money. A person with strong Friend energy may save slowly and steadily, building a buffer over years rather than chasing quick returns. They can be frugal to the point of missing opportunities that require shared investment. Partnerships in business are possible, but only when each person's role is clearly defined and neither one has to carry the other.
Relationships
In relationships, Friend energy tends to show up as loyalty and a need for space. A person with a prominent Friend does not cling or demand constant attention. They show love through being present and reliable rather than through words or grand gestures. They remember what you said three months ago and they keep their promises. But they also need room to breathe, and they can become distant if a partner pushes for more closeness than feels natural.
For a woman, the Officer (官) is the classical partner star, and Friend can clash with that energy by making her less willing to adapt or yield. For a man, the Wealth (財) star is the partner star, and Friend can compete with it by putting independence ahead of shared resources. In both cases, the relationship works best when both people have their own projects and their own space. Friendships tend to be few and deep. Family ties are strong but not expressive. This is a person who will drive three hours to help you move, then drive home without staying for dinner.
When a decade or year brings it
When a luck pillar (大運) or a year (流年) brings Friend, the energy of the period tends to feel like a return to yourself. Work may become more solitary or more competitive, depending on the rest of the chart. You may find yourself doing things alone that you used to do with others, or facing situations where no one else can step in. This is not a time for partnerships or joint ventures. It is a time for doing your own work with your own hands.
With money, a Friend period tends to be neutral or tight. Expenses may rise because of competition or because you are supporting yourself without help. The key is to avoid lending, borrowing or co-signing anything. With people, old friends may reappear, or you may feel a stronger need to be around people who share your exact circumstances. Siblings or childhood friends may play a bigger role. The best way to meet a Friend year or decade is to lower your expectations of others, keep your plans simple and rely on your own stamina.
Too much or too little
A chart with too much Friend can feel like living in a house with too many mirrors. Everywhere you look, you see yourself reflected back. This can make a person isolated, stubborn and unable to collaborate. They may push people away without meaning to, simply because they do not know how to let anyone else in. Money tends to slip away through competition or through refusing help until it is too late. The body can feel heavy and slow, as if the same energy is circling without release.
A chart with no Friend at all can feel the opposite: too porous, too easily swayed by other people's opinions, too quick to give up your own ground. You may lean on others for direction and struggle to stand alone when you need to. Balance usually comes from the element that controls the Friend's element, or from the presence of Officer (官) or Wealth (財) stars that give the energy somewhere to go. If you are curious about where Friend sits in your own chart, you can look at the four pillars and see which stems appear.
