The Rat 子 in BaZi
Nature
The Rat (子) is Yang Water. In BaZi, water in its yang aspect moves quickly and fills every crack it finds. The Rat branch begins about 7 December, the middle month of winter, when the world holds still under frost and the shortest days press against the longest nights.
Its hours run from 23:00 to 01:00, the deep middle of the night. This is not a branch of bold sun or open fields. It belongs to the hour when most creatures sleep and the few that move do so by touch and hearing. The Rat in a chart tends to bring sharp awareness, a mind that notices what others overlook, and a resourceful kind of energy that works in the dark while others rest.
A whole chart decides what this branch does for a person. On its own it is quick, watchful and adaptable, like a creature that survives winter by staying small and clever. The season it rules is one of storage and waiting, so the Rat often colours a person with patience that looks like stillness but is never empty.
Hidden stems
Every Earthly Branch carries stems hidden inside it, called 藏干. These are energies that ride beneath the surface of the branch itself. The Rat holds one hidden stem: 癸 Yin Water.
癸 Yin Water is the main hidden energy of the Rat. Where the surface of the branch is Yang Water, quick and outward, the hidden stem adds the yin side of the same element. This gives the Rat an inner depth that others may not see at first. A chart with the Rat often shows a person who seems still on the outside but holds strong currents underneath.
Yin Water tends to gather and store. It does not rush like a stream. It seeps and pools. So the hidden stem in the Rat can make its quickness feel less scattered and more deliberate, like water finding its way through stone rather than splashing over it.
Clashes and combinations
The Rat has a six-combination 六合 with the Ox (丑, Yin Earth). This is a natural partnership. Water and Earth work together, Earth holding Water so it does not run away, Water softening Earth so it does not crack. When the Rat meets the Ox in a chart, a luck pillar or a year, their energies tend to settle into something steady and productive. The combination moves toward Earth, which means the quickness of the Rat finds a place to land and build.
The clash 沖 of the Rat is with the Horse (午, Yang Fire). Water and Fire do not mix. When these two branches meet, they tend to push against each other like steam hissing on a hot surface. A Rat and Horse in the same chart can create friction that feels restless and sharp, each one speeding the other up in a way that rarely rests.
The Rat harms 害 the Goat (未, Yin Earth). Harm here means a quiet wearing away. The Goat's dry summer Earth presses on the Rat's Water and muddies it over time. When the Rat meets the Goat, the Rat tends to feel hemmed in or worn down, not in a dramatic way but gradually, like a stream slowly silting up.
The Rat punishes 刑 the Rabbit (卯, Yin Wood). Punishment is a harsher meeting. Wood that grows near water can rot at the root. When the Rat and Rabbit appear together, the Rabbit often takes the harder hit, its structure softened and weakened by the Rat's steady moisture.
In each pillar
In the year pillar 年柱, the Rat speaks to roots and family and how others first see you. A Rat year tends to give a person a quick, sharp first impression. People may see someone alert and hard to pin down, with a family background that values cleverness over size or strength.
In the month pillar 月柱, the Rat colours work and the season of birth. Someone born in the Rat's month, beginning about 7 December, carries winter energy into their labour. They tend to work in bursts of focus rather than long steady effort, and they often do their best thinking when others are winding down.
In the day pillar 日柱, the Rat sits under the Day Master, in the house of the partner. A Rat here tends to look for steady ground, a partner who can hold its quick energy without getting overwhelmed. It depends on the chart whether that partnership feels smooth or strained.
In the hour pillar 時柱, the Rat colours later life and children. Born in its hours from 23:00 to 01:00, a person often carries the Rat's watchfulness into their older years. They may become more selective about company and more attuned to small changes around them, like someone who has learned to see in the dark.
With other signs
The Rat belongs to a three-harmony 三合 group with the Monkey (申) and the Dragon (辰). These three branches move together toward Water. When two people with these year branches meet, they tend to understand each other without much explanation. The Rat's quickness matches the Monkey's cleverness and the Dragon's reach. Conversations flow, plans move fast, and each one trusts the other to keep up.
The Rat also belongs to a directional three-meeting 三會 group with the Pig (亥) and the Ox (丑). This group moves toward Water as well, but in a different way. Where the three-harmony group feels like equals running together, the directional group feels like a line that passes energy from one to the next. The Pig feeds into the Rat, the Rat feeds into the Ox.
When you put two charts side by side, look first at the year branches. If a Rat meets a Monkey or a Dragon, the ground is easy. If it meets a Horse or a Goat or a Rabbit, the ground is harder. The whole chart still decides, but these combinations give you a place to start.
