The Goat 未 in BaZi

Nature

The Goat (未) is Yin Earth, the last of the three summer months. Its month runs from about 7 July to about 8 August, the time that closes summer. The hours it governs are 13:00 to 15:00, the early afternoon when the heat of the day is at its fullest and the earth is warm and still. In BaZi, the Goat carries the feeling of late summer: the fields are heavy, the air is thick with humidity, and growth has reached its peak before the turn toward autumn.

A goat branch in bazi is like a quiet, fertile valley after the sun has done its work. It does not push or demand attention. It holds what has been planted and lets it ripen. There is patience in this branch, and a tendency to support whatever is near it, like soil that gives without taking. The Goat is not a branch that rushes; it waits, it tends, it completes.

The whole chart decides what the Goat does for a person. In one chart it may strengthen the Earth element and bring steadiness; in another it may add too much stillness and slow things down. It depends on the other pillars, the elements around it, and the season of the person's birth. No branch works alone.

Hidden stems

Inside the Goat (未) are three hidden stems (藏干). The first and main one is 己 Yin Earth, which is the branch's own element. This stem gives the Goat its core nature: steady, receptive, and grounded, like good soil that holds moisture and nutrients. 己 Earth does not shout; it nourishes quietly.

The second hidden stem is 丁 Yin Fire. Fire produces Earth, so this stem feeds the Goat's Earth energy from within. 丁 Fire is a small, steady flame, not a blaze. It brings warmth to the soil, like the lingering heat of late summer afternoons. This hidden Fire keeps the Goat from becoming too cold or damp.

The third hidden stem is 乙 Yin Wood. Wood controls Earth in the cycles, so this stem sits inside the Goat as a quiet tension. 乙 Wood is a vine or a small plant, something that grows by wrapping around what is solid. It adds flexibility and a touch of restlessness beneath the Goat's calm surface. Together, these three stems make the Goat a branch that holds warmth, stability, and hidden movement all at once.

Clashes and combinations

The Goat (未) has a six-combination (六合) with 午 Horse (Yang Fire). When these two branches meet, they join closely. Sources differ on which element this pair leans toward, but the combination brings together the Horse's active Fire and the Goat's still Earth. In a chart, this can feel like a partnership where one person moves and the other supports, or where heat meets soil and something steady grows from it.

The Goat clashes (沖) with 丑 Ox (Yin Earth). A clash between two Earth branches can feel like two heavy, unmoving things pressing against each other. Neither gives way easily. In a chart, a luck pillar or a year, this clash may bring a sense of being stuck or blocked, as if the ground beneath you has hardened and nothing can shift it.

The Goat harms (害) with 子 Rat (Yang Water). Water controls Fire, and the Rat's Water can dampen the hidden Fire inside the Goat. This harm tends to feel like a quiet, draining friction, not a loud conflict. It may show up as small misunderstandings or a slow wearing down of energy when these two branches meet.

The Goat also punishes (刑) with 丑 Ox (Yin Earth) and 戌 Dog (Yang Earth). Punishment among Earth branches can feel like internal pressure, a grinding or repeating pattern that is hard to break. When the Goat meets the Ox or the Dog, there may be a sense of being caught in a loop, where the same issue keeps returning.

In each pillar

In the year pillar (年柱), the Goat colours a person's roots and family background. Others may first see you as someone quiet, reliable, and a little reserved, like a person from a place where summers are long and slow. The early environment tends to be stable but may have hidden tensions, like the Wood stem inside the Goat that does not fully agree with the Earth.

In the month pillar (月柱), the Goat points to the season of birth: born in its month, from about 7 July to about 8 August. This affects work and career tendencies. People with the Goat in the month pillar often do well in roles that require patience, nurturing, or completing what others have started. They may prefer steady, unhurried work over fast-paced environments.

In the day pillar (日柱), the Goat sits under the Day Master and represents the house of the partner. In a relationship, this position tends to bring a supportive, grounded energy. The partner may be someone steady and warm, or the relationship itself may feel like a safe place to rest. The hidden Fire inside the Goat keeps the partnership from becoming too cold or distant.

In the hour pillar (時柱), the Goat colours later life and the relationship with children. Born in its hours, from 13:00 to 15:00, a person may find that their later years are calm and settled. Children or younger people in their life may bring out the nurturing side of the Goat, the part that tends and waits without rushing.

With other signs

The Goat (未) forms a three-harmony (三合) group with 亥 Pig and 卯 Rabbit, all moving toward Wood. When these three branches appear together in a chart, they gather energy that feeds Wood, the element that controls Earth. For the Goat, this group can feel like a shift from stillness to growth, as if the soil suddenly sprouts new life. People whose year branches are Goat, Pig and Rabbit often find they work well together, each bringing something the others lack.

The Goat also joins a directional three-meeting (三會) with 巳 Snake and 午 Horse, moving toward Fire. This group is tied to summer and the peak of Yang energy. When these three branches meet, the Fire inside the Goat is fed by the Snake and the Horse. The atmosphere tends to be warm, social, and full of activity, quite different from the Goat's usual quiet nature.

When two people's year branches meet, the Goat combines most easily with the Horse, but clashes with the Ox and harms the Rat. The punishment with the Ox and the Dog can create a heavy, repetitive dynamic. None of these are fixed outcomes. The best way to see how two people relate is to put their full charts side by side and look at all the branches and stems together.
