Metal in BaZi
Nature
Metal (金) is the element of structure, clarity and separation. In BaZi, Metal tends to bring a quality of precision, like a blade that cuts cleanly or a bell that rings with a single clear note. People with a strong Metal presence in their chart often have a natural sense of order, a respect for boundaries and a direct way of moving through the world. Metal can feel like autumn air, crisp and sharp, or like a well-made tool that does exactly what it is meant to do. The whole chart decides how much of this element a person has and what it does for them.
The two stems of Metal are 庚 Yang Metal, which is like a broad sword or an axe, bold and forceful, and 辛 Yin Metal, which is like a fine needle or a jewel, refined and precise. The branches of Metal are 申 the Monkey and 酉 the Rooster. The Monkey branch carries a lively, clever energy, while the Rooster branch brings a sense of discipline and a sharp eye for detail. When the metal element in bazi appears strongly, it can show up as a person who values truth, keeps their word and has little patience for vagueness. But a chart is never just one element. Metal works with the others, and its expression shifts depending on what surrounds it.
With the other elements
Metal sits in two cycles that describe how it interacts with the other elements. In the producing cycle, Earth produces Metal, like ore being pressed and shaped deep underground, and Metal produces Water, like a metal blade drawing moisture from the air or a cold surface gathering dew. In the controlling cycle, Fire controls Metal, melting and reshaping it, and Metal controls Wood, cutting and trimming it into form.
When Metal is produced by Earth, there is a feeling of being supported by something stable and patient, like a foundation that holds firm. When Metal produces Water, it tends to bring a cooling, clarifying energy, like a stream running over stones. When Fire controls Metal, pressure or discipline often enters the picture, shaping what was raw into something usable. When Metal controls Wood, it tends to bring structure and direction, cutting away what is unnecessary. These cycles are circles, not ladders. No element sits at the centre or at the start. Every element both gives and receives.
Too much, too little
A chart heavy with Metal can feel like a room full of sharp edges. The person may be extremely clear about what they want, but also rigid, quick to judge and slow to bend. Small disagreements can feel like battles, because Metal cuts rather than cushions. There is often a strong sense of right and wrong, and little patience for mess or uncertainty. In everyday life, this might show up as someone who keeps their desk perfectly organised, speaks in short sentences and expects others to do the same. They may struggle to relax, because Metal's nature is to hold its shape, not to let go.
A chart with very little Metal can feel like a room without walls. The person may be flexible and open, but also find it hard to set boundaries or make firm decisions. They might say yes too easily, take on too much and feel scattered. Without Metal's cutting quality, it can be difficult to say no, to finish what was started or to stand by a choice once made. In daily life, this might look like a cluttered space, a long list of unfinished projects, or a tendency to go along with others rather than state a clear preference. Neither state is good or bad. It is the balance that matters.
As a Useful God
When Metal is chosen as a chart's Useful God (用神), it means the chart needs what Metal offers: clarity, structure, precision or cooling. BaZi selects a Useful God in two main ways. One is by season, called 調候 or climate adjustment. A chart that is dry or hot, with too much Fire or dry Earth, may need Metal to bring coolness and moisture. Metal produces Water, and that Water can soften and moisten what has become brittle or overheated. A chart that is cold, however, does not need Metal. Cold charts want Fire for warmth. Metal in a cold chart would only make things colder.
The other way Metal is chosen is by strength. When the Day Master is weak, the chart may need an element that supports it. Metal is Resource to 壬 Yang Water and 癸 Yin Water, so for these Day Masters, Metal acts like a parent or teacher, nourishing them and giving them strength. When the Day Master is strong, the chart may need an element that drains it. Metal is Output to 戊 Yang Earth and 己 Yin Earth, so for these Day Masters, Metal acts like a child or a project, drawing out their energy in a productive way. Every Day Master meets Metal as a different family member, and the table on this page lists them all. The whole chart decides whether Metal is helping or hindering.
Through the seasons
Metal moves through the year in a clear rhythm. Its strongest months are 申 Monkey and 酉 Rooster, where it is Prosperous (旺) like a blade at its sharpest. In 辰 Dragon, 未 Goat, 戌 Dog and 丑 Ox, Metal is Strengthening (相), gathering power from the Earth of these months. This is when Metal feels supported and solid, like ore being pressed into shape underground.
In 亥 Pig and 子 Rat, Metal is Resting (休). Its energy withdraws, like a tool put away after use. In 寅 Tiger and 卯 Rabbit, Metal is Confined (囚), held back in the Wood season of spring. This is when Metal struggles to act, like a blade that cannot find its target. In 巳 Snake and 午 Horse, Metal is Dead (死), overwhelmed by Fire. This is when Metal has little influence, like metal in a forge, soft and waiting to be reshaped. These states are not fixed. The whole chart, including the other pillars and elements, changes how each month feels.
Energy and rhythm
A chart full of Metal tends to move with a steady, deliberate pace. The person may wake up ready to work, follow a clear routine and feel unsettled when plans change. Their energy is focused but can become brittle, like a blade that has been struck too many times. Rest does not come easily, because Metal prefers to hold its shape rather than let go. A chart short of Metal tends to move in a looser rhythm. The person may flow from one thing to the next, adapt quickly and find it easy to rest, but struggle to finish what they started or to say no when they are tired.
This is not medical advice. It is simply a way of noticing how Metal shows up in daily life. If you are curious about your own chart, you can look at how many Metal stems and branches appear in your four pillars. That will give you a sense of whether Metal's energy is close to you or far away.
